The minutes and days after a road accident shape everything that follows, from your health to your insurance claim. Here is a practical checklist for motorists in Viterbo and across Lazio.
At the scene
- Stop, switch on your hazard lights and wear a high-visibility vest before getting out of the car.
- If anyone is injured, call 112 straight away. In that case the police should attend and record the accident.
- Take photographs of the vehicles, their positions, the road and any signs, and note the names and details of witnesses.
- Exchange details with the other driver: name, licence plate, insurance company and policy number.
The CID form
The joint accident report, known as the CID or constatazione amichevole (the blue form), lets both drivers describe the accident together. If both drivers sign it, insurers can usually settle vehicle damage more quickly. Only sign if you agree with what has been written, and never admit fault under pressure; if you disagree, describe your version or do not sign.
Notify your insurer quickly
Report the accident to your insurer within 3 days, sending the CID form if one was completed. In many cases, where two vehicles insured in Italy are involved and any injuries are minor, the direct compensation scheme applies and you claim from your own insurer, who then recovers the cost from the other driver's insurer.
If you are hurt
Go to the emergency department or your doctor the same day, even if the pain seems minor; some injuries, like whiplash, appear later and a prompt medical record matters for any claim. Keep every receipt and medical document.
Deadlines and offers
Insurers must respond within set time limits, which are longer when people are injured. Claims for damage from road accidents are generally subject to a 2-year limitation period. Before accepting an offer, especially one involving personal injury, have it checked: once accepted, it is usually final.
